STORIA

La canzone fu una delle prime favorite dai membri del gruppo e fu l'unica dell'era pre-"Waterloo" ad essere cantata nel tour in Europa e in Australia del 1977. Fu anche eseguita da vari artisti nel Music for Unicef Concert del 1979.
A causa della sua limitata distribuzione, e dal momento che gli Abba all'epoca non avevano ancora raggiunto un grande seguito al di fuori della Svezia, "He Is Your Brother" riuscì ad entrare soltanto nelle chart scandinave.

Gli Arrival fecero una cover di "He Is Your Brother" e la inserirono nel loro album First Flight (1999).

STORIA

Dopo il successo di "People Need Love", il manager del gruppo, Stig Anderson, si rese immediatamente conto di avere fra le mani potenziali macchine da soldi, esaltato dalle qualità vocali di Agnetha e Anni-Frid e dal talento musicale di Bjorn e Benny. Decise così di duplicare il successo di "People Need Love", dando la possibilità al quartetto di registrare un nuovo LP: "Ring Ring", che sarebbe poi diventato il titolo del primo album firmato dagli Abba.
Bjorn, Benny e Stig furono invitati a presentare una canzone alla selezione svedese dELL'Eurovision Song Contest del 1973. Dopo parecchi giorni di lavoro, Bjorn e Benny terminarono la versione svedese di "Ring Ring", con il titolo di "Klocklat". Stig Anderson scrisse il testo della canzone con l'intenzione di creare un pezzo il più possibile pop, cercando di rimuovere l'atmosfera tradizionalista che imperversava nell'Eurovision Contest. Inoltre, per rendere il singolo più accessibile ad un'audience globale, Stig chiese al cantautore americano Neil Sedaka di approntarne una versione in inglese. Coadiuvato da Phil Cody, Sedaka produsse quella che oggi conosciamo come "Ring Ring".

Il 10 gennaio 1973 la canzone fu registrata al Metronome Studio di Stoccolma, sotto la supervisione dell'ingegnere acustico Michael B. Tretow, che collaborò con gli Abba nella maggior parte dei successivi singoli. Tretow era al tempo fortemente influenzato dal lavoro del produttore Phil Spector, e in particolar modo dal suo Wall of Sound, ossia la tecnica di far suonare contemporaneamente a numerosi musicisti gli stessi strumenti nello stesso studio di registrazione. Dal momento che una tecnica di questo genere era per il momento troppo costosa, Tretow trovò la soluzione: decise di registrare per due volte la base musicale della canzone e di inserire appropriati suoni precedentemente registrati, in modo tale da creare l'effetto che a suonare fosse un'orchestra. Mai nulla di simile fu fatto in precedenza nella storia della musica svedese.

Ad ogni modo, quando Bjorn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid proposero "Ring Ring" alla selezione svedese, arrivarono solamente al terzo posto. Tuttavia, la canzone fece molto meglio nelle chart della Svezia, dove si piazzò prima in ogni classifica possibile.

Fu solo allora che il quartetto decise di creare un vero e proprio gruppo, con dei progetti seri e realistici. Programmarono tour in tutta la Svezia e, di fronte al fallimento di rappresentare il paese con "Ring Ring" all'Eurovision Song Contest, iniziarono a prepararsi all'edizione del 1974 con "Waterloo"...


REAZIONI

Sebbene "Ring Ring" non diede l'opportunità di partecipare all'Eurovision del 1973, si comportò decisamente bene nelle chart svedesi, dando al quartetto la loro prima hit da numero 1. La versione inglese fece altrettanto bene, piazzandosi numero 2 in Svezia, Norvegia e Austria, e raggiungendo la top 10 in Olanda e in Sud Africa. In Belgio sbaragliò la concorrenza assestandosi in cima a tutte le classifiche musicali.
"Ring Ring" inoltre fu il primo singolo ad essere proposto anche nel Regno Unito, ma qui fallì il piazzamento nelle chart. Soltanto una versione remixata della canzone raggiunse la posizione numero 32 nel giugno 1974, e la numero 7 in Australia.

REAZIONI

Lo scopo di "People Need Love" non era tanto lanciare nel mondo della musica il nuovo quartetto svedese, quanto quello di promuovere il duo composto da Benny e Bjorn, che già avevano prodotto altri singoli di successo. Agnetha e Anni-Frid giocavano semplicemente il ruolo di guest star all'interno della canzone. Ad ogni modo, la reazione da parte dell'audience fu sorprendente ed inaspettata.
"People Need Love" entrò nella Top 20 della Swedish Combined Singles/Albums Chart, e raggiunse la posizione numero 3 in Tio I Topp, una popolare classifica ospitata nelle radio svedesi. Incredibilmente, il singolo riuscì ad entrare anche nelle chart statunitensi, seppure non nelle prime posizioni, ma ottenendo un risultato assolutamente di prestigio per dei cantanti svedesi.
Così, sebbene non è da considerare una canzone degli Abba, "People Need Love" è tuttavia il pezzo che li ha visti cantare tutti insieme per la prima volta. Da lì, non si lasciarono più.
